Scaling and Root Planing in Point Cook
At Sanctuary Lakes Family Dental, our focus is on prevention and helping you maintain a healthy smile for life. For patients with advanced gum disease, called periodontitis, we offer scaling and root planing to help restore periodontal health, which is necessary before any more complex treatments such as implants and crowns can be done.
What Is It?
Scaling and root planing is a deep-cleaning procedure that removes the hardened minerals (tartar) that can adhere to your teeth, helping to prevent the loss of teeth, bone and gums.
What to Expect
Based on your checkup, we will recommend this treatment if your gum disease has progressed beyond gingivitis. We’ll take OPG (panoramic) X-rays and measure the pockets in your gums to get a baseline.
We’ll split the treatment into two appointments, scaling and root planning one side under local anaesthesia and then bringing you back to do the other on the next visit.
We’ll bring you back three months after treatment for a follow-up to see if the gum disease resolves.
Oral Hygiene Advice
Many times, periodontitis can be prevented or minimised with proper oral hygiene.
Our dentist will advise you on properly caring for your teeth and gums to keep them as healthy as possible in the future.
Precautions
Patients with bleeding disorders or who are taking blood thinners such as Warfarin must be medically cleared before receiving this treatment. Also, those with heart conditions or synthetic heart valves may need to take antibiotics before receiving any dental procedures, including scaling and root planing. We recommend talking with your doctor or cardiologist before scheduling dental procedures if you have bleeding disorders or heart conditions.
