Bone Grafting in Point Cookman talking with dental technician

Our dental team at Sanctuary Lakes Family Dental is committed to helping you smile your brightest every day! While our goal is always to help you keep your natural teeth for a lifetime, when teeth need to be replaced, we offer a variety of restorative services, including implants and other options.

In some of these cases, a bone graft may be necessary to create enough bone to support the implant. We are happy to provide this service in our Point Cook clinic.

What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone loss can occur due to dental conditions such as gingivitis or periodontitis, poor diet or even TMJ. Bone loss can lead to tooth loss when there is insufficient bone to support the teeth.

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure to create more bone in the jaw to support both natural teeth and implants. We use natural or synthetic material to add volume and density to the jawbone.

For many patients who want to receive dental implants, grafting is the first step in the process.

What to Expect

We’ll send you for scans to determine the volume of bone in your jaw, and then under a local anaesthetic, we will place the bone grafting material. For patients needing an extraction, we may be able to perform the tooth removal and the graft at the same visit.

You’ll feel a little sore from the procedure for a couple of days. It takes from 6 weeks to 3 months for the graft to heal completely; once it has fully healed, we can begin the implant process.

Proper Oral Hygiene

It’s important to practise proper brushing and flossing to ensure optimal oral health. Conditions like gingivitis and periodontitis can lead to bone loss in the future, even after a bone graft. So to prevent future problems, we instruct patients on proper hygiene techniques and recommend coming in for regular checkup and clean appointments.
