MOUTH GUARDS
A mouthguard is a protective device for the mouth that covers the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injury to the teeth, arches, lips and gums. A mouthguard is most often used to prevent injury in contact sports. The majority of sporting organizations currently require sports participants to wear a mouth guard to reduce the degree of force transmitted to the head, if traumatic contacts occur, to curtail potential injury risks to the teeth, face and jaws. The way a mouth guard fits you and its construction, will determine how well it is able to protect you. A well fitted mouth guard, such as a custom fitted, laminated (multilayered) mouth guard, provides the best protection offered from sports injury. This is why at Sanctuary Lakes Family Dental, we recommend:
● A custom fitted, pressurethermoformed laminated mouth guard to be worn in preference to an overthecounter or boil and bite mouth guard during both training, and playing sport.
● A mouth guard to be worn for any sport that involves speed and the potential for collisions, with a risk of contact injury to the head and face.
